Custodio tallies 25 points as Gems overhaul 12-point deficit, rout Erasers

The Cebuana Lhuillier Gems got a huge lift from their shooters when they needed them to deliver.

Jopher Custodio scored 22 of his 25 points in the second half and the Gems riddled Erase Xfoliant with 3-point shots in a 92-74 victory yesterday in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Trinity University of Asia Gym.

The 6-foot-3 forward was at his deadliest in the third quarter, scoring 13 points including two 3-point shots while new recruit Paul Sanga, who replaced guard Rex Leynes in the line-up, went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc as the Gems overhauled a 12-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Erasers, 33-7, in the period.

It was the third win in six games for the Gems, who bounced back from last week’s 82-86 loss to Cagayan Valley to stay in contention for a playoff berth.

“We’ve waited long for this kind of game. We have many good shooters in the team. If they open up things we’ll be tough to beat because our bigs can take care of the interior,” said Gems coach Beaujing Acot.

“We also got lucky. We’re just 1 of 17 from 3-points in the first half but our shooters clicked in the second half.”

June Dizon tallied 15 points, Raymond Aguilar had 12 and Sanga finished with 10 for the Gems, who made six of eight 3-point attempts in the third quarter and 11 for 35 for the game.

Mark Sarangay also had a field day in the paint, grabbing 14 rebounds as the Gems overpowered the Erasers off the boards, 62-40.

The loss was the third straight and fourth overall in six games for the Erasers, who appeared headed for an easy win after posting a 45-33 advantage at halftime.

But they lost their focus in the face of Cebuana Lhuillier’s pressing defense and never regained their bearing by the time the Gems had seize control. Cebuana Lhuillier outscored Erase Xfoliant, 59-29, in the second half.

Erase Xfoliant shot a horrendous 3 of 18 from the field in the third quarter.

Jett Vidal topscored for Erase Xfoliant with 18 points. Marlon Gomez contributed 15 and Nate Matute added 11.
